How to Prevent Mold in Your Home

Category: Home & Garden  |  Permalink

Published: Thursday, January 07, 2010

There are thousands of mold varieties and some do produce toxins. On top of that household molds can even trigger certain types of allergy symptoms in allergy sufferers. By avoiding mold you can possibly avoid eye irritations, congestion and any other allergy-related symptoms. To help you prevent mold we've created a list of simple things you can do to avoid mold.

Mold Prevention

  • Do your best to maintain a dry house. Keep water from building up anywhere in the home, ventilate any damp rooms and whip shower walls and doors after use.

  • Avoid leaving wet clothing in your washing machine. Mold can grow very quickly here.

  • All shower curtains and bathroom tiles should be washed and cleaned regularly with mold-killing products.

  • Mold can grow in plant soil too, so keep from storing too many indoor plants. Especially avoid plants in the bedroom.

  • Any leaks or seepage that are found both inside and outside the home should be fixed.

  • Place plastic over any dirt in crawlspaces and keep them well ventilated.

  • Exhaust fans should always be used in the kitchen and all bathrooms.

  • Humidifiers should be shut off if you see condensation on windows.

  • Dehumidifiers and air conditioners should be used in basements and other areas of the house where mold has a tendency to grow, especially be aware of hot humid areas and climates.

  • If you have a dehumidifier or a humidifier, you should be sure to clean it at least once a week.

  • For any concrete floors you may have, remove carpet and utilize area rugs instead. Area rugs can be easily lifted and washed. You could also try installing a vapor barrier over the concrete.
