How to Prevent Basement Flooding

It is far better to try and be one step ahead of a potential basement flood. Typically it is very simple and easy for you to ensure that your home, basement and foundation are protected from potential flooding. To help you out we've provided a few helpful and simple steps that you should take to help protect your basement.

Why Basements Flood

There are many, many problems that can lead to basement flooding. Such problems include:

  • Hot water tank leakage

  • Freezer leakage

  • Sewage pipe leakage

  • Inclement weather

  • Washing machine leakage

Ultimately, basements typically flood due to the simple fact that they are underground or were made of old or poor quality construction. There are a few very simple precautions you should take into consideration in order to try and flood-proof your basement.

Flood Prevention

First and foremost it is important to make sure that your home is up to code. You can do this by having a licensed inspector or plumber take a look at your home.

If the inspectors do not find anything or you find that you already know the cause of your leaky basement, then consider these simple solutions.

  1. Sewer Check Valves - these control and regulate the flow of water from your house. This is especially helpful you have discerned that this will address the source of your basement flooding.

  2. Sealing walls and floor - this should already be the standard on your homes building codes.

  3. Drain Plugs - these plugs pop open at a certain point of pressure in order to let water through and hold it in the rest of the time. These are less expensive and unfortunately less reliable.

  4. Standpipes - these may be inserted into a drain to divert the flow through the particular drain that may potentially be having problems.

  5. Install overhead sewer.
