Easy to do Household Fire Prevention

It is always wise to take a moment to take into consideration a few precautions around your home as it can greatly reduce the risk of fire. Advance Alert security systems, or National Home Security Systems, has taken a moment to pass along to you some very simple and helpful tips to help keep your home safe.

Household Fire Prevention

  • Matches, lighters and candles should be used carefully and stored when not in use. Matches and lighters should also be kept away from young children and from adults that may have mental or developmental disabilities. They should be stored away from areas where they may ignite easily or accidentally. Lighters and candles should not be kept near flammable objects.

  • All flammable liquids should be stored with care. Any flammable liquids like paint, paint thinner, gasoline, etc... should be kept at least 30 feet away from your home. If that is not possible, store liquids in a very well-sealed container. The containers should be kept in a place that is cool, dry and away from electricity or heat sources.

  • Take heed around fireplaces and wood stoves. You should never stand too close to a fireplace or wood stove. You or your clothes may catch on fire and could be burned. Open fireplaces and stoves should always have a protective screen to keep sparks at bay. Chimneys should be cleaned every year if you utilize your fireplace often or on a regular basis.

  • Avoid putting clothing, blankets, etc... over a lamp. Often times lamps can give off enough heat to ignite a flammable object. Lamp shades should be fire-resistant, kept a safe distance from flammable objects and should avoid wattage that is too high.

  • Check product fire-resistance standards. A lot of the times older objects do not meet newer fire codes and standards. Be sure to check old lampshades, curtains, mattresses and other household objects and ensure your safety by replacing them if necessary.

  • Invest in a trusted smoke and fire alarm from Advance Alert, a trusted authorized ADT dealer.

The safety of you and your family should be your top priority and these simple tips will help to keep them safe. Be sure to visit Advance Alerts website for more information on home fire protection and fire alarm monitoring.
