In order to protect your home from fire, you must be prepared to do a lot of planning. There are quite a few precautions you can take that can help to protect you and your family.

Precautions to keep in mind:

  • You should never leave small children unattended at home. Not even for a minute.

  • Smoke alarms should be installed in the furnace and sleeping areas. Be sure to check batteries once a month.

  • Several escape routes should be planned from the house. There should also be a meeting spote right after leaving the house.

  • Home fire drills should be conducted regularly.

  • Avoid smoking while in bed.

  • All cigarette butts, matches and ashes should be disposed of with care.

  • All matches and lighters should be kept out of reach and hidden from children.

  • If you have a gas water heater, be sure that it is off the ground. Any flammable liquids that may have spilled could be ignited by the pilot light.

  • Clothing should not be cleaned with flammable liquids.

  • There should be a barrier placed around open flames.

  • Loose-fitting clothing should not be worn near a stove, fireplace or open space heater.

  • Your heating system should be checked and cleaned at least once a year.

  • Any electric appliances should be checked regularly for an excessive wear, tear or loose connections.

  • Lighting circuits should only use 15-ampere fuses. Substitutes should never be used.
