10 Ways to Prepair Your Family and Protect Your Home from Fire

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, in 2008 there were 403,000 residential structure fires. Out of those 403,000 residential fires there were 2,780 deaths, 13,560 injuries and over 8.5 million dollars worth of damage and loss. Fires are a typically quiet and deadly force. Heat and smoke build and spread so quickly that it often times leaving families with as few as three minutes to escape. You and your family's survival begin with preparation.

  1. Create a fire escape plan for your entire family. Find at least two exits out every room. Next, you will need to pick a meeting place somewhere outside. And lastly, practice family fire drills at least twice a year.

  2. You should never leave the kitchen while you are cooking, anything can happen.

  3. Keep your BBQ at least ten feet away from any other objects. That includes your home and any nearby shrubs or bushes.

  4. Adults should light candles. Only have lit candles when adults are in the room.

  5. All matches and lighters should be kept in places that are out of reach for young children, like locked cabinets, on top or above the fridge, etc...

  6. Those capable should learn how and when to utilize a fire extinguisher.

  7. If you have any space heaters, be sure to keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn. All heaters should be turned off when either leaving the room or falling asleep.

  8. If for any reason you use gasoline, only store a very small amount in an approved gasoline container. Store it somewhere away from your home and never bring any amount, no matter how small, indoors.

  9. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom. The alarms should also be tested every month to make sure they work.

  10. Be sure to replace all batteries in the smoke alarms with new ones once a year and sooner if the alarm chirps.
