How Safe is Safe?

It's natural to feel secure in your neighborhood and that your home is just as, if not, more secure than the neighborhood itself. However the majority of homeowners are often times shocked when a burglary has been committed in their neighborhood, usually thinking to themselves that "something like that could never happen here". But perhaps you can help to prevent that from happening. To help you prepare for the worst, we've provided some basic burglary statistics to let you know what you may be up against.

According to the Crime in the United States 2008, Department of Justice Report:

  • Property crimes themselves make up just a little over three-quarters of all crime in the United States itself.

  • There was a shocking estimate of 2,222,196 burglaries in 2008 alone - with an increase of 2% when compared with the 2007 data.

  • There was also an increase of 3.6 percent in the number of burglaries in 2008 when compared with the 2004 estimate and an increase of 5.8 percent when compared with the 1999 estimate.

  • Burglary had also accounted for 22.7 percent of the estimated number of property crimes that had been committed in 2008.

  • 61.2 percent of burglaries involved forcible entry, 32.3 percent were unlawful entries (without force) and the remainder, 6.4 percent, were forcible entry attempts.

  • Victims of 2008 burglary offenses had suffered an estimated $4.6 billion in lost property. An average dollar loss per burglary offense was estimated at $2,079.

  • Residential property burglaries accounted for 70.3 percent of all burglary offenses.

A burglary takes place in the U.S every 14.6 seconds. What are you doing to ensure the safety of your home and family? Homes without home security systems or home alarm systems are approximately three times more likely to be broken into, while business are about 4.5 times more likely to be burglarized. Law enforcement everywhere recommends both home and business owners to install ADT security systems.
